HUNTERVILLE NEW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

57th ANNIVERSARY. (0.C.) Hunterville, Dec. 2. The 57tH anniversary of the iiunterville Presbyterian Church will be celebrated next Sunday, when special anniversary services will be conducted by the Rt. Rev. D. D. Scott, a former Moderator of the Church in NewZealand. In the 57 years the church has encountered many difficulties, too often inseparable from scattered country parishes, but it is safe to say that, it was never stronger than it is to-day under the ministry of Rev. A. W. Baxter. At the present time a campaign is in operation to raise funds to renovate and generally improve the amenities of St. Andrew’s Hall. The building (which was formerly the original church) is in a very dilapidated state and it is felt by the Board of Managers that to defer the work longer would be unwise. The necessary funds are being raised by direct giving, and in this connection the managers have combined the appeal with an annual appeal for the general church funds. Already the collectors in their various districts report an excellent response. PERSONAL. Mrs. Dallard, of Wellington, is a visitor to Hunterville and is staying with her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Baxter, at the Manse. Mr. K. Atkins, of the local railway staff, has been transferred to Waipukurau, and has left to take up his new position. Prior to his departuie he was met by friends at an informal social in the Scots Hall and presented with a teaset and an envelope as tokens of esteem. Mr. Hunt, formerly of Wellington, has filled the vacancy locally. Mr. C. G. Purton, who has been the “live-wire” secretary of the Home Services Association, has tendered his resignation on account of his leaving the district to take up a position at Milson Aerodrome, Palmerston North. At a farewell function held at the residence of the president (Mr. J. Robinson) Mr. Purion was presented with a well-lllled wallet and Mrs. Purton with a piece of pottery. The new secretary of the branch is Mr. A. Greig. OBITUARY. The death occurred at Sanson last week of Mrs. Jane Prisk, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of the Sandon district. She was born in Scotland in 1852 and came to New Zealand witli her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Bjookie, in 1855 tn the sailing ship Matchless, they were among the first settlers to land at Scotts Ferry. The large attendance at the funeral, which was held at Sanson on Friday, testified to the popularity of a dear old lady. She is survived by one brother (Mr. Frank Erookie, Parawanui) and one sister (Mrs. McDonnell, Marton). Another sister (the late Mrs. Snellgrove, Hun. terville) predeceased her some time ago. RATA PERSONALS. Secretary of the Rata Football Club for 20 years, apart from a period when he was on service overseas, Mr. Bob Gillon was guest of hohour at a social last week and was presented with a pocket watch in appreciation of his sterling service to the club. Mr. Howard Rhodes, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Rhodes, has been successful in passing his first-year medical examination for veterinary science at Otago University. He has returned home for the vacation and will leave in February to further his studies in Sydney.
