CHURCH NOT ON TRIAL COLLABORATIONIST CHARGE
London, Oct. 2.
At Zagreb the prosecutor at the trial of Archbishop Stepinac and 15 others on collaborationist charges emphasised at a Press conference that this was not a trial against the Roman Catholic Church or clergy, but “against violations of the law.” He himself was baptised a Roman Catholic. The court president told reporters that all members of the court were Roman Catholics. The prosecutor added that he was sure that the Papal Nuncio, Bishop Joseph Patrick Hurley, who attends every session of the trial, was only there as an observer. He knew Bishop Hurley had his own special ideas and personal feelings, but would be permitted to confer with Archbishop Stepinac and offer him any assistance for the defence.
