PALMERSTON WINS N.Z. INDOOR BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Wellington, last year’s winners of the New Zealand women’s indoor basketball championship, went down to Palmerston North by 14 points to 8 in a thrilling final to the 194 b tournament at Christchurch yesterday afternoon. The pew champions went through their seven games without defeat, scoring 190 points to 78 scored against them. Wellington suffered early defeat at the hands of Canterbury on Friday morning, but, after that, they struck their true form, and had five convincing wins in succession until they met Palmerston North in the final. Wellington scored from a penalty early in the first quarter, and at half time were only one point behind, with scores at 7-8. After that, however, they could net only one more penalty, while Palmerston North scored three field goals. The Wellington B team won all four games in the B grade division, with Wairarapa a« runners-up, with one loss, 30-13 to the champions.
