EPSOM UPSET AT RANDWICK
FAVOURITE SHANNON LEFT AND BEATEN CONCERTO WINS DERBY
Reed. 7.30 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 6. The greatest upset at Randwick yesterday occurred when the odds-on favourite Shannon was left 12 lengths at the start c» «he Epsom Handicap. Darby Munroe rode Shannon magnificently to come within half a head of the winner, Blue Legend. Sections ot the crowd demonstrated against Munro, but after the race the starter, Jack Gaxieu, took full responsibility for the bad start. Unexpectedly Young Veilmond jumped away at the outset and led till Blue Legend came through on the rails. Shannon's terrific bid from the tail of the field caused commentators to class him as a likely challenger of Bemborough. Another son of Midstream, Concerto, won the A.J.C. Derby handsomely from the favourite, Flying Duke. Concerto followed the leaders most of the way while Flying Duke moved into second place behind Denali. Concerto and Monogram! challenged together and Concerto took the lead only in the last few strides. The “baby” of the Breeders’ Plate field, Temeraire, ran away from his older opponents to win the first of the season's two-year-old events at Randwick. Starting an odds-on favourite, he ran the five furlongs in 591 sec., a record for the Breeders’ Plate. Temeraire’s official birthday is, of course, August 1, but he will not be two years old till the end of this month. Good Idea left no doubt as to his superiority over the field in the Colin Stephen Stakes. He was last till the home turn, when he moved easily through the field and gained the lead with a furlong to go. Details of results:—
