HULABALOO WINS AT OTAKI

LING MEMORIAL STAKES SURPRISE

CHOTE RIDES THREE WINNERS FOR WANGANUI STABLES Three Wa-nganui-trained horses, two from H. J. Benge’s stable, were winners at the opening day on Saturday of the Otaki Maori Racing Club s spring meeting, and in each instance the Wanganui jockey, K. Chote, was associated with these successes. One win was in the main event, the Ling Memorial Stakes, Hulabaloo running away from the field over the final furlong to return a dividend of two score on win investments and double figures for a place. His stablemat. Mr. Pym, won the Second Tuni Maiden, and Idle Along, owned and trained by Mr.«J, A. Nicholson, won the first Puhi Maiden. Peter Gazelle followed up his Wanganui win by scoring in the open sprint, and two other Otaki winners were Supreme and Grand Central. The Kapiti Hurdles went to Bay Robe, owned by Mr. S. R. Hammond, of Hunterville.

The weather was fine, though overcast at times, and the track was in good order, with the sting out of the going. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator turnover at £72,105 10s, a record for the course and £13,794 10s better thap the £58,311 handled on the corresponding day in 1945.

Several times during the day delays occurred through fractious horses breaking through the barrier, and as a result the schedule slipped badly, the last race being started about three-quarters of an hour after the time set down in the race-book.

FAVOI RITE’S HURDLES Bay Robe and Rockanui, from L. Knapp’s Awapuni stable, made most of the pace in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles and filled first and third places respectively, being divided by the place favourite Greek Dancer. After delaying the start Leybourne and Theolateral missed the jump out, and Bay Robe and Rockanui led through the straight from Foreign Coin, Greek Dancer and Kahuraponga. Greek Dancer improved his position along the back, where Bay Robe had increased his lead to half a dozen lengths,' and they were followed into the straight by Rockanui, Leybourne, Te Ranui and Gold Claim. Bay Robe came on to win with ease by six lengths from Greek Dancer, who was two and a-half lengths in front of Rockanui. Gold Claim was a close fourth, ahead of Te Ranui, Theolateral Ausar and Kahuraponga, with Foreign Coin last. WIN FOR IDLE ALONG The Wanganui-owned and trained Arvakur mare Idle Along won the First Puhi Maiden Plate decisively from Mr. G. M. Currie’s Ringmaster mare Cincture. The latter, with Saa length. Cincutre just nosed Tortago Idle Along, Bonny Fair and Beaulitha. Tortago was almost on terms with Cincture at the straight entrance, with Idle Along on the outer, and inside the final furlong Idle Along asserted her claim to win by nearly a length. Cincture ust nosed Tortago out of second money, and there was a back to Bonnie Fair, Goody Two Shoes and Beaulitha. EASY FOR SEA FURY Backers were again right when they sorted out Sea Fury for the Pahiko Hack Handicap, for the Tiderace filly scored an easy win. After being smart to begin, Sea Fury was steadied and Genghiz Khan led from Royal Baron and Carmelita, with the favourite just, behind them and Prince Wanaka and Otamaive next, Belle Zorra having missed the jump-out. Royal Baron, Genghiz Khan and Sea Fury were i almost on terms at the distance, but Sea Fury then cleared out to win by three lengths. Prince Wanaka finish'd fast to get. within a neck of Royal Baron, and Belle Zorra was a close fourth, followed by Carmelita, Genghiz Khan and Iron Duke. HONOURS TO HULABALOO

High Order, favourite for the Ling “[ emorial Stakes, was never in the Ycture, and the honours went to Hulabaloo, who returned a dividend of about two score for the win tickets

and double figures for a place. Smartest to begin was Lord Elgin, who was ; followed out of the straight by Bar'age. High Order, Lord Darnley, The , C-’and and Behave, with Tutere, | Voltaire and Hulabaloo next. There was not much change in positions fill I they passed the half-mile, where Hula- | halon had moved up to join Lord Darnley, ju •’ behind Lord Elgin an 1 Barrage. On the home turn Hula- j ba 100 challenged the leader and came away to win by nearly three lengths, J Lord Elgin beating Tutere by two | lengths for second p’ace. Silver Rod | finished on for fourth, ahead of Bar- I Flahuluk, Lord Darnley and •'have. ANOTHER WANGANUI WIN Lady Oratory, warm favourite for ’he Second Puhi Maiden, got away ■ ully and was sei an impossible task, Mr. Pym. from H J. Benge’s Wanganui stable, giving that 1 rar?er his see- ■ vid win in succession and K. Chote . his third sure ".sfu 1 ri' n for th ' day Ir. Pym took over the lead from |

Afton Water, Horouta and Castlebrae at the end of a couple of furlongs, where Lady Oratory commenced to make up leeway in a strung-out field. Mr. Fym was first into the straight. Lady Oratory running wide, and over the final stages the Wanganui-trained gelding was doing it nicely, a length and a-ha)f in front of Homespun, with Horouta half a length back. Lady Oratory, wide out. was fourth, ahead of Castlebrae, Tuki Ngapo, Bulaselle and Ecstacy. SUPREME ’S GOOD PRICE Supreme drew the outside position at the start of the Katihiku Hack Handicap, but got away well to win with ease and return a good dividend. Grey Donne and Tremello were actually first out from Sunreme, Hadrian, True Friend and Rickie, and in the scramble for positions in the first furlong Clyde Bridge came down on his nose and dropped his rider. Supreme was challenging Grey Donne at the half-mile and came round the home turn ahead of Hadrian and Sergeant Jack. Nothing had a chance with Supreme over the final stages, but Tremello finished on solidlv from well back for second, two lengths ahead of Sergeant Jack. Moutoa Lord was fourth, followed by Culloden Moor, Hadrian and Rickie. W. Hardman, rider of Clyde Bridge, was uninured, and rode the horse back to the birdcage.

PETER GAZELLE’S SPRINT Peter Gazelle was favourite, at a generous price, for the open sprint, and proved the best of good things. He jumped to the-front at barrier rise and was followed at the half-mile by Theocritus, Specialist, Robin’s Reward. Deprive, White Cap and Master Dash. Robrn’s Reward then set off after the leader, but Peter Gazelle went on to win by four lengths from the Hawera-trained three-year-old. Battle Dance came with a late run to return a great dividend for third place, and was followed by Theocritus, Gav Lena, Salmi, Deprive, Imperial and Master Dash.

OTAKI’S “HAT TRICK” Grand Central wo-a the concluding event at double figures to give Otaki stables a "hat trick’’’ in the last three races. Tahli and Grand Central piloted Matawene, Brown Derby, Sari and Nanaaki out of the straight, but Cock Robin then dashed to the front. Then Matawene and Brown Derby tc r ' lr over at the three furlongs from Genghiz Khan, Tahli and Grand Central. The last-named came through in the straight just when Nanaaki had taken command, and in a great finish Grand Central got a head verdict, over Nanaaki, who was two lengths clear Matawene. Tahli was ciose un, fourth, and then came Salut d’Amour, Sari, Genghiz Khan and Brown Derby. The last-named, ridden by N. McKenzie, behaved well at the barrier and looks likely to be good.
