HORSES ON SCENE FOR WANGANUI TROTS
Horses already on the scene for the Wanganui Trotting Club’s annual meeting, to be held on the Wanganui racecourse on October 12 and 19, include Wincopipe, Silkworth, Diana Rose, Militant, Playful, Pinehurst and Titoki. Other visitors are expected early next week.
Playful is now trained by A. F. Liddall, of Feilding, and has recently been converted from the trotting gait to a pacer. Some of Leon Berket).’s team will be competing at the Meth ven meeting to-day. Berkett has advised that his horses for the Wanganui meeting will arrive on Thursday next, together with Dr. Marshall’s pair, Tantalar and Contiaband, which are trained at Christchurch by F. W. May.
M. R. Edwards als'o has a team engaged at. Methven to-day and will arrive in Wanganui next Thursday with Right Royal, Gambler’s Fortune and Worthy Robert.
A. Holmes has a learn of six horses nominated for the meeting and is expected to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday.
F. J. Smith, A. W. Broughton, G. T. Mitchel], G. H. Stubbs and R. J. R. Morris have all booked accommodation and will be the first of the northern contingent to arrive next week. Indications are that there will be a bigger clash between North and South Island horses at Wanganui than at any other meeting for some time past. The totalisator will be operated on the win-and-place system, the electric machine being used for issuing place tickets and the win tickets by manual operation. This is the method used by the Wanganui Jockey Club at its spring meeting, when nearly £136,000 was handled for the two days. Withdrawals are due at 8 p.m. on Monday next, and already the indications are that very satisfactory fields will remain in for the opening day of the meeting.
