GENERAL NEWS

Warm, Cloudy Weather. The weather in Wanganui yesterday was cloudy for the most part with warm temperatures and very little wind. Conditions at sea were hazy, but there were periods of bright sunshine in the afternoon. At 4 p.m. the barometer was steady at. 29.78 in., there having been little variation in pressure all day.

Food for Britain. A woman who wishes to remain anonymouas, made a donation of £3 to the Wanganui Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society yesterday toward the food for Britain appeal. She has made other cash donations in the past and the money is used for the purchase of food parcels which are sent to the United Kingdom.

Fire in Dwelling. An outbreak of tire in a dwelling occupied by Mr. R. P. Andrews, 42 Rimu Street, Gonville, was responsible for the Wanganui Fire Brigade receiving a call at 2.58 p.m. yesterday. One machine responded, but the lire had been extinguished when the brigade arrived. Damage was confined to a few boards in the kitchen. Fuel Demand Exceeds Supply As a result of the difficulty they experienced in obtaining fuel during the winter, the majority of Wanganui householders appear to have reached the conclusion, individually, that it would be a wise move to buy next season’s stocks well in advance. Therefore, when the Gas Corporation announced about a week ago that it would again supply coke it was swamped with orders, but having contracted to supply 2000 bags it has had to stop taking further orders. Collier Diverted. Originally scheduled to load at Westport for Wanganui at the weekend, the coastal motor-ship Storm has been diverted to Wellington. The vessel arrived at Wanganui on Thursday with general cargo from Bluff, via Wellington. She completed discharge yesterday and sailed for Westport late in the afternoon. It is not known when a collier will load at West port fop Wanganui. About a week ago the Rata was at Castiecliff discharging Greymouth coal, but no colliers have come here from Westport for some time.
