CANDIDATES FOR OTAKI (Special) Palmerston N.. Oct. 3. Rain overnight made the tracks l. quagmire for final training for Otaki and Hastings-engaged horses at Awapur.i this morning. Trainers had the use of the course proper, with the pegs out 50ft., and, although time, were very slow, candidates who attracted attention were Tremello, Voltaic, Financial, Matamene, Lady Oratory and Hakim. Langue d’Or (Boreham) and the novice Horouta (Sellars) took 59 3-ssec. for half a mile. Bay Robe I (Aitken), a fancied candidate for the 1 hurdles at Otaki, went freely over seven furlongs, the last five occupying 1.14 4-5. After covering a lot of extra I g) ( vmd, the two-year-old Petre Mar ; (Collins) was being held back to a J Ba.andshar gelding at the conclusion of three furlongs run in 43 l-ssec. The four er is undoubtedly speedy and is entitled to favouritism in the juvenioi event at Hastings. Centennial Pride (Saunders) was slopping at the end of five furlongs in 1.44, the last four in 57 l-ssec. Tahli (Sellars) required 1.19 2-5 for live furlongs. Financial (Saunders) jumped away i from the mile post, but did not have | much pace on early, being speeded up | only over the last live furlongs to | record 1.16. Ecstacy (Buchanan) was doing better than Red Foil (Rout) at the finish of six furlongs in 1.31 2-5, the last three taking 473-ssec. Over the same ground Incision (Aitken) recorded

Specialist (Garth) and Old Red (Clutterbuck) were associated over half a mile in 58 4-ssec. Gay (Andrews) could have bettered his 45sec. for three furlongs. Honours of the morning went to Tremello (Bowness) who ran five furlongs in 1.13 3-5 and he did it well within himself. Hakim (Arney) was travelling very easily alongside Cramond Bay (Broughton) throughout a mile in 2.7 3-5, the last five furlongs occupying 1.19. The former revelled in the going, but Cramond Bay was inclined to work sluggishly. Cinture (Garth) did not handle the going while running the last three furlongs of her work in 45 2-ssec. Matawene (Jenkins) finished strongly to beat Havildar (Clutterbuck) at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.43 1-5. It will not be for lack of condition if the former fails to race prominently at Otaki.
