NO ADDITIONAL IMPORT LICENSES
POSITION TO BE CHECKED
(P.A.) Wellington, Oct. 3. The Government would not consider any extension of the J 946 import licences beyond March 31 next. In all likelihood 1947 licences would expire on December 31, 1947, according to information given to the meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce by Mr. W. H. Hindie. The Government, he said, wanted to be able to take stock of lhe position and see what calls were likely on its exchange resources at a given date, a thing it had not been able to do before.
Mr. Barton Ginger said if the Government clamped down on December 31, 1947, probably only about twothirds of the licences would be used. The whole licensing system at the moment was in a state of chaos.
