JUDGE RULES AGAINST SATURDAY CLOSING
Sydney, Oct. 2. An application by the Shop Assistants’ Union for Saturday morning closing in Sydney and Newcastle was refused by Mr. Justice Webb, of the Industrial Commission, to-day. He also refused an alternative claim that shops in the Sydney metropolitan area should close at 5 p.m. on weekdays and 11.30 a m. on Saturdays. The Judge said that in a previou case the Full Court had stated that it must consider public requirements, and the effect of change on ancillary industries. Information revealed that shop assistants were performing a necessary service on Saturday mornings.
