WORLD REACTIONS TO FINDINGS AND SENTENCES OF TOP NAZIS

PRAISED BY AMERICAN PRESS

Heed. 8 p.m,

York, Oct. 1

The American Press endorses and praises the Nuremberg Tribunal’s findings against the Nazis, although some newspapers express surprise at the acquittal of Schacht, Papen and Fritsche. The Hearld-Tribune, in an editorial, says:

“One ean only regard the Tribunal’s massive work with profound respect. ‘Surprises’ in its judgment become, when one examines closely the reasoned argument which supports them, a convincing attestation to the painstaking fairness with which the case was tried. The Tribunal, in both its general summation and individaul findings, lays the legal basis for its action firmly and precisely. It exeludes loose theories of collective guilt. It tries each defendant upon the indictment as returned, and upon nothing else. The Baltimore “Evening Sun,” says: “The verdicts achieve a certain rough justice. There will be some disposition to wonder at the acquittal of Papen and Schacht, two of the slipperiest of those who had anything to do with the Hitler Government. There may be some disposition to question the condemnation of Keitel and Jodi, who, as soldiers, were required to obey.” EISENHOWER’S REACTION. General Eisenhower, who flew from Berlin to Prestwick, Scotland, to-day sighed when told of the Nuremberg sentences. “Ah, that Papen, he gets out of everything,” he said. Reuter's Nuremberg correspondent says he has learned that Schacht and von Papen are considering asking for a safe conduct to the British zone “SHAMEFUL END.” Rood. 5.5 pm. London, Oct. 2. The "Times,” in a leader, says: "The shameful manner of their end will strike with particularly humiliating force at the pride of the officer caste in the person of Keitel and Jodi, but the same sentence was inflicted on other generals by the courts of the Nazi Party, whose policy they were content to serve.”
