BARGAIN MISSED IN SUPER VAALS

SPEED EXHIBITION AT AVONDALE (Special) Auckland, Sept. 18. Super Vaals gave a super exhibition of speed to win his division of the Empire Handicap at Avondale, for he led throughout a-nd not at any time during the seven furlongs contest did he look like getting beaten. This three-year-old is going to develop into a grand sprinter. He is a chestnut by Vaals from he Australian-bred Bahama Girl, by Nassau. A real bargain was missed when Super Vaals went under the hammer ns a yearling at a sale at Olahuhu in April of last year- Nobody wanted him and he was passed in at 110 guineas, and Saturday's race was worth £2OO to the winner. With a third at his first start last November, Super Vaals has now 7 won £275 in stakes—and it took Barwon and Majesty to beat him first up. He was only a neck end half a length away that day. Jayquil scored his first win in this class at Avondale last week, outstaying the opposition. He was ridden a very fine race by G. Meehan, whose only previous success had been on a big outsider in Royal Silver at Te Rapa ten months ago. This lad claimed the full allowance on Saturday and that might have helped, but for all that and the fine finish it proved. Jaygirl still seemed to have a bit up his sleeve at the end. He is a useful hack that may get another win in on the provincial circuit before he is found out by the weight. Jayquil is now seven years old, so it has taken him a long time to get on the winning list, although he has not been over-raced. PROMISING SPRINTERS.

One of the surprises of Saturday’s racing at Avondale was the manner in which the two Avondale ex-hacks Mollie Bon and Bronzeman finished in the open sprint, third and fourth places going their way, with Mollie Bon only a short heat} to the good. They did well to make such a showing against Our Bridge and Peter Gregor, and drew attention to their prospects on the provincial circuit. Tiger Tan was not produced on the second day at Avon-

dale, when he declined his engagement i*n the Coronation Handicap. He is in excellent order and further heavy rain over the week-end may be the means of keeping the tracks easy enough for him for a time yet. He | will probably be given his first race over a middle distance at the provincial meetings, where the class is not extra goodIrish Fox repeated at Avondale the dashing display of hurdling he had given at Pukekohe three months ago, although in his latest success he fenced much better, being less inclined to take risks with the formidable obstacles. When caught in the right mood this jumper is good enough to beat the best over the slicks', especially at distances under two miles, and in his present form he may get another win in on the country circuit, which incidentally, commences at Thames this week. The manner in which he had been working at Ellerslie was the cause of Te Kawiti being sent out a big favourite in the race won by Irish Fox at Avondale last week. Actually he seemed the only horse likely to seriously challenge the leader. Ho had got up to within striking distance of the leader when he fell heavily at the fifth fence, five furlongs from home. If he is none the worse for this crash Te Kawiti may win over the battens shortly.
