GAS EXPLOSION KILLS 8, INJURES 60

New York. July 18. A gas explosion which officials, a few hours earlier, had tried to avert, killed eight, injured at least 60 and demolished four buildings in the centre of Onset (Massachusetts), a summer resort. Two other buildings were so severely damaged that they had to be razed. The blast was attributed by the police to natural gas in a restaurant cellar escaping. Fumes were detected in the morning and police, firemen, and gas-workers traced the defect to a cellar. It was corrected soon afterwards, but aparcntly a gas pocket had formed and was ignited mysteriously. The restaurant was crowded with mid-day patrons.
