STRATFORD CARD

COMBINED CLUB MEETING Concluding a three-day winter circuit in Taranaki the Egmont and Stratford Racing Clubs will stage a programme of eight events at Stratford to-day. and judging by the acceptances the idea of winter racing in the province has been popularly supported. Backers will have as a guide the results of two days’ racing at New Plymouth, but it will have to be remembered that the Stratford course, with a long uphill straight, is a more severe test of stamina than is provided at New Plymouth. The going will be holding. Betting is win-and-place. The cross-country event, is the Stratford Hack and Hunters’ Steeples, with seven acceptors. Ngamotu was a winner at Ellerslie and Last Match at New Plymouth and thp pair will be bracketed. Northfield may be n?xt best. Heading lhe list for the Malone Hack and Hunters' Hurdles is Gold Claim, who has already won two hurdle races on the circuit and would not be stopped by 10.13. It must be noted, however, that he is also in the Winter Hack. Lotto and Mountain Fox would appear to be his most dangerous opponents. The main event on the flat is the President’s Handicap, for which thefield is somewhat on the lines of those seen out at New Plymouth. The Grand, a double winner last Saturday, is engaged in both this and the sprint. At 8.6 in the ten-furlong event he might prove a tough proposition for Dunbar and Second Seal. Whackie has 10.4 in the Tonks Handicap but he has the class to carry that impost. Almaza and Victory Dawn may test him to-day. The day’s programme starts at 11.30 a.m., and backers may be found supporting the following:— Malone Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles. — Gold Claim, Lotto, Mountain Fox. Mr’ *•'•» Stakes Sailor’s Song, Betty oiefort, Koura Dink. Pre. dent’s Handicap. The Grand, Dunbar. Second Seal. Egmont Hack Handicap.—Gayanne. Crystal Ring, Titahi.
