SAFETY OF CHILDREN ON DUBLIN STREET BRIDGE

The safety of pedestrians, particularly young children, is the main concern of the Automobile Association (Wanganui) in requesting the Wanganui City Conucil to erect some sort of barrier separating the footpath on Dublin Street bridge from the road. At the meeting of the association executive this week members reported instances of near accidents as a result of children darting off the footpath and running to the other side of the bridge to watch river craft passing under the structure.

In reply to a former request of this nature the City Council replied that, the erection of a barrier would be a “major job” and this the council could not. undertake at present.. The association executive took the view that a barrier of three wires would be sufficient to keep children from impulsively running across the bridge, and this could not. be considered a major job. It was decided to ask the council to reconsider the matter and in the meantime to issue a warning to parents regarding the danger ol children leaving the bridge footpath.
