GAS STILL SHORT

COAL RELIEF POSSIBLE ON SATURDAY The earliest the Holmlea can arrive al Wanganui with a relief shipment of coal is Saturday, ami if she can roach here by that date this city’s most pressing gas worry will be over. Coal on Saturday will mean that the gas works will not have to be closed temporarily, and it may also mean that a cut-off will not be necessary this afternoon.

Coal shortages are preventing the works operating to full capacity, and consequently the gas was cut off yesterday afternoon between 1.30 and 4 p.m. "All being well and definite word being received that coal wili reach here by Saturday, it is thought possible that reduced pressure this afternoon should sec the works through, vyithout the need for the drastic step of a complete cut-off, as has been the case for the preceding two days. If the shipment does not arrive there should be sufficient coal on hand* to carry the works on until Sunday. This has only been possible by the restrictions that have been imposed, and by the burning of non-gas producing lignite to eke out the supplies and keep the retorts going.
