W.D.F.U. ANNUAL MEETING. (0.C.) Waitotara, May 22. Mrs. A. Verry presided over the 9th annual meeting of the Waitotara branch of the Women’s Division of the farmers’ Union. There was a fair attendance of members, and a number of apologies were received. Mrs. McPhail, Mrs. Gower and Mrs. Lorimer were Wanganui visitors and were welcomed by the president. Mrs. Forcyth presented Mrs. McPhail with a shoulder spray. The secretary, Mrs. Forcyth, presented a satisfactory balance-sheet. Miss Audry Gleason again very kindly audited Ihe books. The president, in her annual report, sa.a the year had been a successful one, help nad been given to the W.D. Rest Rom, leper fund, etc. There had i-een a generous response to the appeals for fat for soap, food for Britain, goods and cash had been donated by members and people of the district. Mr- How was thanked for free cartage and Whiting’s Pictures for advertising, the secretary for the efficient way in which she had carried out her duller, the committee and members for their co-operation during the year. A vote of thanks was passed to the president and secretary for their work luring the years they had been in office. Mrs. McPhail took the chair for the election of officers for the ensuing veav, which were as follows— President, Mrs. A. Verrv (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames F. Train, J. Laird, D. Mahoney and J. Verry; committee. Me.'dames E. Parsons, 11. J. Wilson, R. Verry, K. Handley; advisory committee, president and secretary, delegates to provincial mee.ing, Mesdames A. Verry, R. Forcyth, j. Laird; delegate to Dominion conference, Mrs. Forcyth. The business part of the meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. Mrs. Handley presented Mrs. McPhail with a bouquet. Afternoon tea was served by the committee The guest speakers were Mrs. Me-' P.'iail, who spoke on the work of W.D.F.U., Mrs. J. Lorimer, convener of the Navy Auxiliary’s food for Britain, told of the work of her organisation and congratulated them on the wonderful help they had given. A farther donation of £5 13s 6d was then nanded to Mrs. Lorimer. Mrs. Gower, who judged the flowers, gave interesting points on judging. The . peakers wete accorded a vote of thanks by acciamation. Results of competitions: Jug of flowers. Mrs. H. J. Wilson 1: Mrs A. Verry 2; Mrs Handley 3. Chrysanthemum’s, Mrs. Mahoney 1. Points prizes lor the year, cooking, flowers and general, were won by Mrs. J. Laird. V?i next meeting, May 30, best bloom and bowl of flowers. ' NATIONAL PARTY CARD EVENING. The National Party ran another successful Flag 500 evening in the Waitotara Hall on Tuesday night, May 14. Miss Mar;/ Hodgetts was in great, form. She carried away a dressed fowl 311(4 half a dozen eggs as a result of ner efforts in a competition, and with Mi. and Mrs. S. Hyland and Mr. R. G. Verry as her partners, won the evening’/? card prize. The previous winners were unable to reproduce their initial form, and although Miss Hodgetts was briinant, it appears that Mr. and Mrs. Hyland, trained at Ngutuwera, will worry the locals at any time, whilst It is certain that Mr. Verry, having struck fo;m. will be able to maintain it, and will have to be reckoned with .or the points prize. A light supper was served at the conclusion of play. INDOOR SPORTS. There was a good attendance on the opening night, of the indoor sports held in the Hall on Maj' 6. At. a recent meeting held in the /upper room th? tollowing officers were elected: Piesident, Mr. N.J,ee<; captain, Mr. S. Savage; vice-captains. Miss Muldrock and H. Downes; secretary, Mrs. Penfold, committee, Mrs. A. Hurley, Mrs. G. Muldrock, Misses G. Verry, E. Mathews, B. Henderson, H. Pearce, Mtssrs G. Muldrock and L. Thorburn. I AHEVVELL PARTY. evening was spent in competitions, games and music. Before supper was served, Mr. G. Belton, speaking on behalf of those present, wished Mr. and Mis Hockley happiness in their new aor.-.e and asked them to accept a wall nmror and travelling companion as a mar’ of the esteem in which they ■veie held. Mr. Hockley suitably replied. WAITOTARA AND DISTRICT PERSONALS. Mrs. N. Barlow, Christchurch, and Miss Maysmor, Auckland, are the guests of Mrs. W. R. S. Brewer, “Wai-i-au " Mr. and Mrs. N. Leet are spending (lie school vacation at Palmerston North. Mrs. F. Hopkinson 1« visiting Christchurch. Mrs. Hopkinson sen. and Miss Hopkinson, St. John’s Hill, have been staying with Mr. F. Hopkinson. Mrs. W. Sutherland and her two •mail children travelled by air to Invercargill, where they will spend several months. Mrs. Jesse Hurley, Wanganui, has been the guest of Mrs. Jack Hurley. Miss Papworth is spendinig the scnool holidays with her parents at Westmere. ( • Miss E. Mathews is spending the school holidays at Norlh Auckland. Mrs. W. Dobie and daughter, Pauline, are visitors to Hamilton. Mrs. A. Hurley is visiting her sister, Mis. Cran.tone, Palmerston North. Mrs. McPhail, Mrs. Gower and Mrs. Lorimer, Wanganui, attended the annual meeting of the Waitotara W.D.F.U. Dr. Cicily Hands, who is on the medical staff of Croniwaß Hospilal, lias been the guest of Mrs. C. Ilodgitl.s Wiieii a small girl Dr. Hands lived in Waverley with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Hands.
