MARTON NOTES

A QUIET EASTER Easter in Marton passed very quietly. With the exception of the Christian Convention camp at Marion Racecourse, there were no other big organised events. Showers fell on Friday, but otherwise the weather remaineu tine and mild. After the bustling, jostling crowds in town on Thur‘day, a peculiar quietude settled on Marton’s shopping area on Friday, and while there was a little more activity on Saturday and Monday, the streets for the most part presented a deserted appearance. The only sporting attractions offering were the Marton Gun Club's monthly shoot, lhe official opening of the Marton Harrier Club and the Rugby practices on Marton Park. The golf links received a certain amount of patronage, while a few enthusiasts went along to the bowling green. There was a large exodus of Martonians to the races in Feilding, by both car and rail. Special buses from Maron were well patronised. Others, taking advantage of the Easter break from work, went holidaying to other towns, the Hawke's Bay being popular. A special combined church service was held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Good Friday morning, while all the churches arranged special Eastertide services for Sunday. The Christian Convention concluded last night, when lhe speaker was Mr. R. A. Laidlaw, of Auckland. It was es imated that the attendance at some of the meetings reached 1000. Altogether the offerings amounted to £B4B, which was considered a splendid effort. Delegates came frofti as far south as Dunedin and as far north a’ Dargaville. At the conclusion of last night’s meeting most delegates left for heir homes bv car, but several waited tilt this morning for train connections.

No lawlessness nor accidents were re ported to the Marton police.

The Civic Theatre was crowded for all sessions. The management arranged a matinee yesterday, and this was very well attended. Saturday night saw the “house full” sign displayed before lhe commencement of the programme, and those who had failed to reserve seats were unable to gain admission. MARTON W.D.F.U. VICTORY HALL DANCE. To commemorate the first anniversary of the Victory Hall, the management has decided to hold a big anniversary dance in the Hall on Saturday, April 27. The funds derived from this function are to go towards wiping off the amount still owing on the Hall. A good orchestra has been engaged, ana a first-class supper is to be served. The admission price is 2s 6d. TURAKINA NEWS. An Anzac Dav service will be held in the Turakina Hall on Thursday, commencing at 10 a.m. All returned servicemen are asked to parade, and to assemble at the railway station at 9.30 a.m. Dress will be mufti, medals or ribbons. The -address is to be given bv Major J. S. Stewart, of Bulls. The Marton Municipal Brass Band will be in attendance. To-morrow (Wednesday), the Turakina branch of the W.D.F.U. will hold its annual meeting in St. Andrew’s Hall, Turakina, commencing at 2 p.m. A full attendance is requested. LOUDSPEAKERS AT MARTON STATION. A recent improvement at the Marton Railway Station, has been the installation of six loudspeakers. Three speakers have been placed on each side of the station and portion of Ihe luggage room partitioned off to form a miniature studio. The installation of the system was completed iast week by workmen under the supervision of electrical communications branch engineers. Ma. ton has now fallen into line with other centres, which have found the system very convenient, for advising intending travellers of the arrival and departure times of trains as well as sorting out individual passengers for whom messages might be waiting.
