A POLLUTED CITY
NO SEWERAGE IN BOMBAY Bombay, April 8. Stench and filth unparalleled in the memory of the city’s one and a-half million inhabitants existed in Bombay to-day, as 11,000 sweepers prolonged their strike in to the fourth day. Sewerage compressor stations which pump the city’s drainage to sea have now been abandoned by the workers, resulting in foul-smelling sewage overflowing into the streets. Doctors declare that the city’s health _ is gravely menaced, particularly in view of the prevalence of smallpox. About 50 Congress volunteers and social workers are vainly trying to cope with the offal and market rubbish. which after four days has assumed mountainous proportions. The city has been without meat for four days as drivers of municipal vans are among the strikers.
