TARANAKI CARD

DICUSSED The provincial racing circuit in Taranaki will be advanced substantially during the week-end with the fixture at blew Plymouth, where the Taranaki Jockey Club will stage a two-day fixture, commencing to-day and concluding on Monday, when the anniversary day of the province will be celebrated. With the Taranaki Cup to-day in the four-figure class and the Taranaki Stakes a weight-for-age attraction on Monday, the club is able to offer racing enthusiasts two attractive features. Jn addition, judging by first-day fields, there will be many interesting contests, for which earlier racing at Hawera should furnisn a fairly reliable guide. Betting will be win-and-place. The effect of the clash with the metropolitan meeting at Trentham Is evident from the calibre of the field set down for the Taranaki Cup, but that should not detract from its appeal to racegoers, for there is ample material for an interesting tussle for major honours. Hippodrome, who heads the list with 8.8, has proved a consistent performer, and as recently as -January he carried 8.11 and outclassed the President's Handicap field over eleven furlongs at Te Aroha. Black Plato has performed well in essays on Taranaki tracks, and Fort Royal, as the winner of the Stratford and Egmont Cups, is well placed at 8.3 to complete the provincial treble. Of the opponents to this trio those that may appeal are Sir Bian, the unlucky Hulabaloo, Master Ted, Seafire and Young Trent.

A more even field is that which will line up for the Flying Handicap, though its dimensions may be reduced because of dual engagements. Tideless on midsummer racing form is entitled to be respected. Black Beret has failed in several recent attempts, but Kentish and Drambuie have excellent credentials. Further down the list are the Hawera suprise winner. Autoscore, as well as Lord Coronach, Bronya, Good Bay and Plato Lad.

Large fields are likely to line up for most of the supporting events, and the following may be fancied:— Waitara Hurdles. Mimicry, Gold Claim, Dawn Flight. Ngamotu Juvenile. Aggravation. Bramerton, Ray's Pal. County Welter.—Young Trent, Lord Coronach, Bronya. Flying Handicap.—Drambuie, Tideless. Kentish. Moturoa Hack.—Cressida, Ratene. Declaim. Taranaki Cup. Fort Royal, Hippodrome. Hulabaloo. Okato Hack.—Po Marama, Broiefort Star, General Saleve Timaru Hack. New Deer, Mallee; Golden Shar. Following are the fields:— 11.47
