TRENTHAM FIELDS

THOMPSON HANDICAP PRGSPECIS

With the weight-for-age North Island Challenge Stakes, the mile-and-a-half Autumn Handicap and the sixfurlong Railway Handicap to support the Thompson Handicap as feature events, the Wellington Racing Club has a strong foundation for the programme built up for the opening day of its autumn meeting at Trentham, commencing to-day and concluding next Saturday. The fixture has attracted the best horses in commission, with a strong contingent from the South Island, and the fact that meetings are also being held at Ellerslie and New Plymoutn will not detract from its appeal. The win-and-place totalisator at Trentham is certain to be fully taxed to-day. The milers in the Thompson Handicap represent as attractive a field as could be got together in the Dominion these days, and the issue must be considered very open. Irish Note, after his successes at Trentham in January, when he downed Golden Souvenir at weight-for-age, makes mast appeal, in spite of his 9.9. Master Dash is likely to take on the big sprint, though he is such a strong finisher that a mile should not be beyond his compass. Findon reappeared at Woodville after a lengthy absence and lack of racing may be against him. Benbecula and Kuri had a great tussle over the mile at the January meeting, when Aiderman was a brilliant winner over seven furlongs. Saludos is well seasoned for a tilt at this stake, and Bonny Flight has impressed down South. Da Vinci, as a winner at Masterton, must be respected. Of the remainder Gay Stroller would make most appeal. Recent form may prove a guide to prospects in the Autumn Handicap, run over twelve furlongs, and backers may prefer candidates that have proved themselves. Foxhaven was a winner at the January meeting and will* make a strong appeal. Financial fell from grace and would have to show improvement to regain favour. Langue dOr has shown excellent form and may be the elect of C. Thompson’s Awapuni stable, which also shelters two other in Alethea, a winner at Masterton, and Saludos, who is also engaged in the Thompson Handicap. On Alethea’s finishing run she may beat her stablemate. Cowper has run good races up north, but Expanse has been disappointing in gallops. Barrage, Flying Ace, Matador and Royal Victor will also have their supporters. With all his weight. Master Dash will be a favoured candidate for the Railway Handicap, though he is going to meet stout opposition. Peter Robinson’s rise from the hack ranks is marked by his being awarded 8.9, and on his Wellington Stakes display he may make light of that. Blue Bonny may be held safe toy Donegal Bay, whose finishing run to be only two noses behind Master Dash and John Gay in the Telegraph Handicap in January was a brilliant effort. Baby Girl is also an interesting candidate who has had six wins in eleven starts this season, admittedly in company nor so select as this. Zulu Boy, Gigli, Centime and Lady Nahleen also have credentials. Keen interest would be taken in the Challenge Stakes if Kindergarten were a contestant, but the chances are that he will be an absentee to-day. That would leave the way clear for Al-Sirat, Exeter and Deprive, with Spiora probably best of the youngsters. The presence of Subdued's brother, Tribute, in the Plunket Nursery will provide an opportunity for racegoers to see his brilliance tested against other improving juveniles like Omit, Karachi, Hiraji and Blue Tie. With the issue very open in the other events, betting is likely to cover a wide range, and the following may appeal:—

Rimu Highweight.—Merger, Kelmont. Phalaria (or Court Judge). Plunket Nursery. Tribute, Hiraji, Flying Robin. Challenge Stakes. Al-Sirat, Exeter,' Deprive. Autumn Handicap.
