FIRE PROTECTION

EXTENSION TO COUNTY AREA WANGANUI COUNCIL GIVES SUPPORT Support o£ the Wanganui County Council was given yesterday to the propo-als (hat all lire brigades which have pumping fire engines should provide a rural fire-protection service in coun.y areas within working distance of the town, estimated in normal cir. cumstances to be about 10 miles. This service would be given to both industrial and dwelling property, but would, of course, be effective enly where a static water supply is available within a reasonable distance—up to 1000 f..—from the property. Assistance from councils in the payment of costs for turning out to fires in county residential areas was desired. Whether the brigade should attend a tire should be left to the discretion of the superin.endent. The proposal was made that county councils should be responsible for costs of all brigade attendances to properties in counties not protected under contract. Where the service was found effective, the cos s would be charged to the county councils and legislation would provide that the council could either pav these costs out of ordinary revenue or collect from the owner of the property concerned.
