FIELDS AT TRENTHAM

SOME EARLY PROSPECTS (Special) Wellington, March 6. A fair quantity of rain has fallen at Trentham, but'the course needed ii and with an improvement in the weather the going should be good for the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting. Fields will be large and most of the events look very open. After his success at Masterton Kelmont, who has been penalised 41b., will be in favour for the Rimu Highweight. He is quite well enough bred for a race of this class and his 9.11 is a handy weight. Carn forth and Merger will benefit through the easing of the turf, and Court Judge would probably be improved by the race he had at Hawera. Court Judge is also in the Silverstream Handicap, run over the same distance under a lighter scale. Another who should be prominent is Phalaria. Two of the candidates for the Plunket Nursery, Hiraji and Shining Ring, were winners last week-end and neither was liable to penalty. Hiraji’s form appears to be good and he should , race well again. However, the favourite will probably be Tribute, the brother to Subdued, who made a great impression when he won at Woodville and is regarded as a galloper of high class. Good form is possessed by Omit, Karachi, Malanui. and Opulent and much is expected of Flying Robin. Backers might favour Tribute, Hiraji and Flying Robin. If Kindergarten lines up for the North Island Challenge Stakes he did not accompany his stablemate, wilt'add 1o interest in the race. He Little Billy, who has arrived on the scene. He* is eight years old and has not raced since January of last year when he won the Hazlett Gold Cup at W’ingatui. Information has been received that he is in fair order, and if that is correct he should score his fourth success in the race. His opponents will include the good Auckland performer Exeter, the New Zealand Derby winner Al-Sirat, Deprive, and the two-year-old Zealander. Peter Robinson is in the race, but. seems more likely to run in the Railway Handicap. Long-Distance Event.

The favourites for the Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-half, may be found in the upper portion of the list. As a winner on the course and over the same distance in January * Foxhaven will be one of the best backed. He will have 101 b. more to carry, but will still be expected to run a great race. The favourite might be Langue d’Or, second in the Wellington Cup and a place filled at Masterton last week. Langue d’Or appeals as one of the most. iTkely.of the field. He is trained by Awapuni by C. J. Thomson, who also has Alethea and Saludos in the race. Alethea is not penalised for her Masterton win and will be expected to start. Saludos might be reserved for the Thompson Handicap. Cowper and Expanse will carry northern support. The former has been very consistent and the latter won the Auckland Cup. Because of his second to Irish Note here in January Catterick Bridge is entitled to consideration. Royal Lancer has been weighted as a horse on the decline, but southerners think he has a chance. Two of the best of the lightweights might, be Barrage and Matador. Prominent, in the betting might be • Langue d’Or, Foxhaven, Alethea, Barrage and Matador. The Tinakori Hack Handicap has not drawn a really • strong field. Zahra is a good hack, but lack of racing might be against him. The South Island bracket Grill and Patmos, will command a lot of attention. Other horses with recent form are Specialist, Balcherrie and Gay stock. Thompson Handicap.

Irish Note is such a brilliant miler that he should have an excellent chance in t»ie Thompson and is almost certain to be one of the favourites unless the going is bad. Master Dasn’s form in January was so good that he is capable of running well in either this or the Railway Handicap. Findon is very good, but unsoundneoS has troubled him a lot and he might not be fit for a hard mile. Irisn Note should find his strongest opposition in the middle of the handicap where Aiderman, Kuri, Saludos, Da Vinci, Foxcatcher and Bonny Flight come in. Alright, though difficult to follow, is always a possibility and a good lightweight is Gay Stroller, Irish Note, Da Vinci, Saludos and Aiderman should run well.

Despite his big weight (10.2) Master dash might, run a great race in the Railway. However, the favourite is likely to be Peter Robinson, decisive winner of the Wellington Stakes. If Donegal Bay reproduces the form she revealed when she finished a close third in the Telegraph Handicap she will be the hardest to beat. Another possibility if he returns to his best is Gigli. Magic Art’s Feilding form was good enough to give her a great chance in the Silverstream Hack Handicap. The opposition includes Gynerio, Leighon’s Glory, Blanket and Cuba and also Court Judge and Carnforth, who are engaged in the highweight. Backers might favour Magic Art and (if are reserved for this race) Carnforch and Court Judge.
