AUSTRALIAN MIGRANTS
PASSAGES ARRANGED w Canberra, March 5. Free passages are to be granted to British Service personnel and their dependants, and assisted passages to United Kingdom civilians and their dependants wishing to migrate to Australia, under an agreement signed by the Commonwealth and the United Kingdom Governments. These arrangements operate only as long as favourable conditions for settlement in Australia are known to exist. The free and ass sted passage arrangements will not come into operation until dates yet to be agreed upon by the two Governments. These dates will be largely governed by the limn when shinning mav become available for the carriage of migrants. The announcement of the agreement was made simultaneouslv in Canberra and London to-night. Mi. Caldwell, Minister of Tn’ormalion, said that under the ass’sted passages persons of 19 and over would bo required to contributn £lO, and juveniles of 14 to 15 £5 toward the cost of the passage. The remainder of the cost, includinr free passages for children under 14 years, is being borne equally by the United Kingdom and Australian Governments.
