A spectacular Are gutted a section of the works of British Chemicals Ltd. this morning, damage to the building, plant and stock be.ng assessed at over £20,000. The fire, which had evidently been in progress for some time, was first noticed by a passer-by in King Stret just before 6 o'clock, and when the brigade arrived flames were bursting through the roof of the three-storeyed building. The firm does an extensive business in the product.on of f'astics, and a large quantity of highly .nflammable material was stored in the pre-« mises. Six machines on the scene had no chance of saving this section of the works, but isolated the major part of the premises, which are T shaped. This part of the factory contained large stocks of chemicals, and had the flames reached it, nothing could have saved the works from complete destruction. Eighty employees were engaged m the section gutted, but they will be absorbed in other departments. The origin of the fire is unknown. Insurance details are not available.
