CHECK ON NOXIOUS WEEDS

SOME FARMERS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH NOTICE Most property owners had endeavoured to comply with notices requiring them to clear noxious weeds, but in each district visited last month there were some farmers who had made no attempt to eradicate or keep their weeds under control, particualrly gorse, sta.ed the noxious weeds inspector, Mr. J. Robinson (Hunterville), reporting to the Rangitikei County Council at its meeting in Marton yesterday. Odd plants of ragwort had been noticed in most districts, but on two properties only was this weed growing in any quantity, Mr. Robinson added. Both these, properties were in the northern portion of the county. “With the exception of rhe Tura. kina Valley, Wangaehu and lower Turakina, less variegated thi-tle has been found this year than in previous yeais, and even in the above-men-tioned areas where paddocks were stopped from seeding last year a great improvement is in evidnece this season,” Mr. Robinson stated. "1 have not compelled farmers who have this weed growing in large areas to clear their properties, but have insisted that all available time be spent in clearing and keeping clear their boundaries. Next season, when more labour will be available for this class of work, I hope that as much as possible of tlie badly infested areas will be cleared.”
