MOTHERLESS BABY GOES TO AMERICA
Small Michael Shaun Collins is probably one of the most widelytravelled babies in the world. At the age of 14 months he has covered 4519 miles by air.
Michael is a serviceman’s baby, the son of T/Sgt. James Collins, jun., of Minne/o.a, attached to the ground crew of the United States Army Air Forces.
Three years ago Sergeant Collins was sent to England. About six months later ho married an English girl in London, who died when Michael was 11 months old. After her death her family cared for the baby for three months.
Michael's aerial journeys began when Sergenat Collins decided to send him home to Stillwater, Minnesota, and entrusted him to an Office of War Information worker when she left London to fly to New York. Several hundred extra miles by air followed before he reached Stillwater, and his 4500-mile total. In addition, his arrival made him the town hero, and a special “Michael Collins Day” was planned for the event.
