MANAWATU FIELDS

PROSPECTS AT AWAPUNI

. The restoration of racing dates enables the Manawatu Racing Club io resume its usual thrbe-day summer fixture, opening to-day at. Awapuni

and continuing to-morrow, with the concluding day on Saturday. Fields for the opening day are well up to standard, and some excellent racing appears certain. The track is reported to be in excellent order after the recent rains. Betting will be on the single-pool system. Principal event to-day is the Manawatu Cup. the distance of which, formerly a mile and a-half, has been increased since 1943 to one mile and five furlongs, so it provides an excellent test for the Wellington Cup. Don Quex, winner in 1943. went on to win the Marton and Wellington Cups, and some of to-day's contestants may also attempt the feat. Typhoon, who ligures as topweight with 9.0. is regarded as not being a definite starter, otherwise he would probably be the favourite. However, he has not done sufficient'work to be recommended for a long-distance event. Langue d’Or has been well forward in his recent essays and is steadily improving. Rink would appreciate a sound pace and has excellent credentials. Alethea is a true stayer who won over seven furlongs at Bulls but disappointed at Woodville. Duality has been a consistent performer in his recent start’ having won at Masterton, Waverley and Bulls. Lowry Bay generally runs an honest race, but Financial cannot be recommended on his Otaki form. Bridge Acre is an honest mare who shaped well at Otaki and has a handy impost for this distance. Catterick Bridge is generally staying on, and Dunbar has run some promising races. Lady Scholar won the Oaks and may emulate Belle Cane’s 1940 feat of adding the Manawatu Cup to her laurels. Royal Victor and Singing Hills have lightweights’ chances, though the latter was disappointing at the Pahiatua meeting. The verdict may be for Duality, Bridge Acre and Alethea or Langue d’Or. The open sprint is the Fitzherbert Handicap, run over seven furlongs, , and this distance will suit several of the contestants, including Master Dash. Lord, Theio, Poutatau, Saludos, Sir Bradbury, Colais, Listen In and Gay Lena. .Foxcatcher is likely to be reserved for the Grandstand Handicap. Perhaps Saludos, Colais and Master Dash may be found playing a’ prominent part. Alright ran a smart six on the Wanganui track on Monday morning but look charge of his rider and bolted another two circuits. It would be surprising if he were able to give of his best to-day after the escapade. The Grandstand Handicap, run over ten furlongs, will not attract a large field, but Foxcatcher. Phoenix and Broiefield may be a well-backed trio. The race for two-year-olds is confined to fillies, and there are some smart ones engaged, with a preference expressed for the chances of Blue Tie. Argumentative and the Signatory-Gay Divorcee bracket.

The hack events appear very open, and the large field in the Maiden Plate will present an early problem for backers. The following may ap-I peal:—■ Maiden Plate.—Colopier, Czar’na. Po Marama. j Nursery Handicap.—Blue Tie. Argumentative, Signatory-Gay Di- 1 vorcee bracket. Manawatu Cup—Duality, Bridge Acre,• Alethea (or Langue d’Or).
