ATHELING COULD NOT BERTH
ANCHORED IN STREAM AT LYTTELTON TUGS DAMAGED GOING ALONGSIDE. (P.A.) Christchurch, Dec. 25. The escort carrier Atheling, with a South Island draft of returning service personnel, did not berth at Lyttelton this morning as arranged, because of high southerly winds .blowing. and it was feared she might, be difficult to handle in the inner harbour. The carrier anchored in the stream soon after 4 a.m., and personnel were later brought to the wharf in two tugs and launches. The overhanging super-structure of the carrier caused difficulty for the tugs in going alongside. One tug’s mast was snapped off, and the other tug’s mast was damaged.
As the result of these arrangements the men were somewhat later in getting ashore than had been originally intended. However, as ample margin of time had been allowed, all the men made train and bus connections, and it was necessary to hold only one express, that for Picton, for a short t me.
