WANGANUI CRICKET

LOCAL INTEREST IN THE WELLINGTON REP. TEAM SELECTION OF H. B. ( AVE Wanganui interest in the Wellington representative eleven to play Otago and Canterbury for the Plunket Shield will centre in the form of H. B. Cave, who has been selected in the Wellington side. In Wanganui cricket this season Cave has claimed 19 wickets at small cost, and has performed very ably with the bat. His best innings this season is 62 not out. On Saturday the two leading teams met but it was rather unfortunate that the Wanganui Club were without the services of some of their regular players. The weakened Wanganui attack performed very creditably in forcing the T. 0.8. batsmen on the defensive for the greater part of the afternoon. With two wickets down for 10 the exstudents had to fight hard against the steady bowling of Jones, Powell and Tizard. Hunt took an excellent catch at short leg to dismiss Deere whilst Keats was run out through backing up too much, however Bergerson 39 and Thomas 37 retrieved the position somewhat and carried the score to 75 by very cautious batting before the former was bowled when attempting a big hit off Powell. Nimmo, playing his first game this season, looked like getting some runs when Hipango bowled him with a good ball which came in quickly from the off. Thomas, after batting for an hour and a-half, fell l.b.w. to a faster one from Tizard ano things did not look too promising for the old team with five down for 95. The tail wagged and Brown (40) and R. Mete Kingi (46 not out) batted very soundly and carried the total to a handy score. Webby (24) and Benefield (10 got their rims quickly and when McPhail was run out the total was 238. The Wanganui fielding was excellent and one would be safe in saying that at least 50 runs were saved in the field. Hipango, Williamson, and Hunt, in particular, were very keen in the field. Tizard bowled excellently. He sent down 22 overs and captured two for 59. He was ably supported by Jones, Priest, Powell and Horne. Wanganui, with seventeen minutes left to play, fared disastrously in losing three wickets for seven runs, Thomas took an excellent one-handed catch in the slips to dismiss Horne, while two balls later Bergerson bowled Priest with a good ball. In the next over Brown got one past Hipango to claim his wicket. In the two overs Bergerson revealed excellent form and pace and if selected for holiday matches should take toll with the ball Wanganui face a stiff proposition on Saturday, when the match will conclude.

On the other wicket Marist finished the day with tlie excellent score of 280 for nine iand here again the tail turned what looked like the beginning of a debacle into a winning score. Davies, just left the Technical College, made an excellent 94 not out and, with Salmon, has so far added 120 for t/he tenth wicket. If Davies can keen up this form he will trouble most of the bowlers from the other teams. Salmon (56 not out) played very confident cricket and scored quicklv against the tiring United attack. Sanders again proved his worth with a sound 37 and, with Davies, took the score from 80 for six to 160 before the partnership was broken. Cuming (30) and Williams (17) macle handy scores in the early part of the inning-,. The United bowlers fared badly but Felts and Low' each secured * four wickets and bowled untiringly Uiroughout the afternoon. The United batsmen will have to be at their best on Saturday to overtake the Marist score.
