RUGBY IN ENGLAND

NEWS OF CAPTAIN D. G. . BARTON In ia letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Barton Marton, Captain D. G. Barton, the former Wanganui Rugby representative player, states that he has played much Rugby while in England.

After being a prisoner of war for a long period, the change was most welcome. He states that the New Zealand Services side, for which he has played, is a good combination and has given a good account of itself in many engagements. The “Kiwis” were creating a line impression in England and playing rugged football. Captain Barton states that he has played for the noted English Rugby Club, Harlequins. Last month he went to France and played in three matches for the New Zealand Services team, going through unbeaten. The games were played at Lyons, ClermontFerand, and Romian. He adds that the French sides are fit and very fast. The New Zealanders were hospitably entertained and drew large crowds, netting gate money to the value of £200( for the French authorities at each match.

While in England, Captain Barton sat for examinations and gained his diploma as an associate of the Institute of Bankers, London. It is his intention to visit Switzerland at the end of the present month. Before joining the forces, Captain Barton was on the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, W anganui.

N.Z. SERVICES RUGBY TEAM BEAT S. AFRICA

London, Doc. 19. The New Zealand Services Rugby team beat, the South African 6th. Armoured Division by nine points to six al Richmond. The score might, have been higher, but. the New Zealanders who wore superior everywhere except in set scrums, were ‘ handicapped by greasy conditions.
