MARTON NOTES

LATE MB. J. A. BUSH. Reference was made by the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) at the meeting of the Marton Borough Council on Wednesday evening to the passing of the late Mr. J. A. Bush, who had been a member of the council over a period of 10 years, and, as chairman of the Marton Chamber of Commerce, was was instrumental at the jubilee in 1929 in the presentation of the Mayoral chain to the council. He had always taken a keen interest in any undertaking for the benefit of the district and given of his best. Personally, he had lost a very great friend and the district also as one of the foremost figures in the timber industry of bfew Zealand. A motion of sympathy to Mrs. Bush and family was recorded by the councillors standing in silence. MARTON BOWLING CLUB Marton Club was defeated by Bulls on Wednesday in a match for the President s Cup, played on the Bulls gieen. It is hoped that a series of matches will be played between the two clubs during the season. The competition lap-ed last season through lack of travelling facilities. Results of the recent match were as Bulls players being mentioned first: Stevens, Meads 31, v. Black, Hempieman 13; Capstick, Drew v. Lourie, Sayers 28; Green, Westwood 23, v. Jonski Gorrie 15. MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL A. D. Riley and Co. advised that the filter plant was ready for shipment on December 7, 1945. The delay in shipping the filter plant was probably due to the shipping s.rike in England, but it was hoped that it would arrive early in the new year. Tenders for the construction of the filter house were referred io the Works and Finance Committee to finalise. Quotations from the Hume Steel Co. for 4 miles concrete-lined pipes fittings and an alternative price for bitumen dipped steel pipes were referred to the Works Committee. The Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board advised an increase in the price of local tar from 6d to 8d per gallon as from December 1, 1945. Referred to the Gas Committee, who wii] be asked to report on the selling price of coke and gas and the effect of the new legislation providing for a 40-hour week. The council decided to proceed with the construction of footpaths on a basis of half cost with the Housing Department. Mr. M. McCarthy wrote with reference to the council’s previous decision to clear gorse on Ngare.a Street by bulldozer. The council will proceed with the work as soon as satisfactory airangements can be made.

In connection with the sealing of footpaths on Golding’s Line, Princess Street and Wing’s Road for the Railway Department in accordance with the original quotatisn, the Works Committee will be asked to report on the work yet to be completed by the borough and advise whether work for the department could be carried out in view of increased costs since the quotation was made the charges would be advised. The mayor reported on the recent meeting of the Regional Planning Council at Wanganui and the council decided that any contribution towards expenses of this organisation will be considered when further derails are made available. CRIPPLED CHILDREN’S SOCIETY

The president and several members of the Marton branch of the N.Z. Crippled Children’s Society, took a number of crippled children to a garden party held at the Friends’ School, Wanganui, last Saturday. The children were delighted with a Punch and Judy show and concert given for their entertainment, and were provided with soft drinks and ice creams, and each child received a present from Father Christmas. Al] enjoyed the outing immensely.
