EIGHT-OAR ROWING

COLLEGIATE SCHOOL CREW WIN WELL

Rowing well within themselves, the Wanganui Collegiate School eight-oar crew beat a crew comprised of six members of the Wanganui Technical College and two old boys of last year s crew on the lower course of the Wanganui River last night by a good halflength. Water conditions were ideal and the race was watched by a large number of spectators.

The rival eights went away to an even start, but in the first fifty strokes Technical moved into a lead of more than a canvas. Collegiate School were hanging on grimly, but shooting the Dublin Street Bridge, Technical had a lead of more than three-quarters of a length. It was here that Williamson, stroke of the Collegiate eight, called on his crew for a challenging effort. Gradually they reduced the leeway and passing the stone groyne were oh level terms

Rowing stroke for stroke, the crews raced neck and neck. At Guyton Street, Collegiate School, rowing with a good body swing and hard leg drive, moved into a definite lead. Technical came again but Collegiate School met the challenge successfully and won by the margin stated. The crews were:— Collegiate School: C. H. Williamson (str.), P. Barker, W. Andrew. K. C. Dodgshun, J. Galbraith, B. I. Williams, J. P. Davies, A. R. Tarte (bow); cox, A. .1. Lewis. Technical College: R. Smith (str.), J. Rolls, D. Mill L. R. Robertson, J. Nicholson. Lind, B. J. O’Neill, M. W. D. Tate (bow); cox, E. G. Tyler. INTER-SCHOOL RACE Because of mumps at Christ’s College, the scheduled eight-oar boat race between Wanganui Collegiate School and Christ's, to be held on the Wanganui River on Monday next, has been cancelled. A four-oar race between the schools will take its place on Monday.
