MANY HORSES COMPETE

GYMKHANA IN AID OF CARNIVAL FUNDS GATHERING AT RACECOURSE Horses from all parts of the Wanganui dis rict took part in the gymkhana held at the Wanganui racecouise on Saturday in aid of the Combined Carnival Appeal. Competition was keen and a high standard was reached in ring and jumping event - . Some of the horses were seen at the recent Wanganui Show, but others were newcomers. The entries received showed that this type of sport is popular in the district. The gymkhana attracted a good attendance of the public, other attractions being nationaj dancing, woodchopping events and a N.Z. shearing championship, an innovation for Wanganui.

This event was won by J. Chapman (Turakina), with D. Coleman (Para, para Road) second, and Len Roache third. The winner secured 51 points, and the second man was awarded 50 points’. Onlv half a point separated second and third placings. The action of those competitors in the horse events who refunded their prize money was greatly appreciated, said Mr. C. S. Smithj president of the Wanganui R.S.A., on Saturday. He added that this money would help swell the carnival funds.

Horse events were organised by Mr. A. Macnab and judged bv Messrs D. R. Jackson and R. Bamber. National dancing was organised by the Wanganui Naiiuna] Dancing Society ana judged by Miss Joan Peters. Pipers were Messrs E. Morgan and T. Mulcahey, Woodchopping competition organisers were Messrs A. Glengarry and J. Hughes. Timekeeper, handicapper, and starter was Mr. J. Collingwood.

The shearing championship was organised by Messrs M. B. Hirst and G. E. Tovell-Soundy. Judge was Mr. A. 11. Collins and timekeepers Messrs J. Currie and K. Broughton.
