THOSE COLLEGE BERETS

Wanganui Girls' Cnllege pupils wore berets to church yesteraay. We have travelled a long way from the oid straw boater hat which many t'ormer girl students of school anu college nave cause to remember as being the most uncomfortable form ol headgear ever devised by man. In evidence of this is the decision of the Wanganui Girls’ College and Technical College, to adopt berets. No matter if one’s head was round, the narrow or square type, or high crowned, the hats of the past just haci to fit, and be worn despite the resultant headache. Many years ago a mother of one of the pupils at the college, who continually complained and suffered from the hard headgear—as many other girls did—paid a visit to the school and suggested that the hats be changed and a soft panama type be used instead. The head mistress oi that time was aghast at the idea and said definitely that the rules concerning the uniform could not poss.bly be changed. But they were! Just a few years later the softer style of hat was adopted, much to the benefit of the girls. Now berets are proving more popular wear than felts, because of their adaptability to heads of various sizes. They are being adopted as part of the school uniforms for girls students. Berets were ordered for the Girls’ College and the first order having come through, about 60 boarders wore them yesterday to church.
