SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Miss Aiken, Godwin Crescent, is spending a holiday in the Wellington district. Mrs. Weston Allison, Rangitikei, is staying with her mothr, Mrs. Nelson Hughes, Maxwell. Mrs. A. C. Abbott, Mangaweka, returned home yesterday after spending a few days in Wanganui with her daughter, Mrs. Pepper. Mrs. W. Framheim, of Avarua, Raratonga Island, is staying with Mrs. K. Prowse, Wanganui Fast. Mrs. O. A. Bailey, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. J. Gray, Wanganui East, returned to Sydney last week by the Wahine. ENGAGEMENT. Burnet—Ashcroft. The engagement is announced between Evelyn Ruth, third daughter of the late Rev. B. D. Ashcroft and of Mrs. E. M. Ashcroft, St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, and Colin Nairn, second son of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Burnet, Feilding. HITHER AND THITHER. Travel Club. Major R. K. Gordon will be the speaker at the Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. Travel Club meeting on Wednesday night next, in the main lounge. He will speak on “Life as a Prisoner of War.” Display of Pupils’ Work. On Wednesday next there will be a display in the D.I.C. showroom, of toys and articles made by pupils of the Girls’ College. This collection, will later be shown at the college annual display of work and sold in aid of the baths fund.

Masquerade Ball. Many people are eagerly looking forward to the Masquerade Ball to be held in the Carlton Hall next Wednesday night. Many plans have been made for the enjoyment of the dancers. All are asked to wear a mask. Fancy dress is optional. Prizes will be awarded for best fancy dress and the grand parade is at 10.15 p.m. and all will unmask at 10.30.

Porirua Monetary Appeal. The Mayoress, Mrs. W. J. Rogers, acknowledges with thanks, further donations to the Porirua monetary appeal to provide comforts and outings for the women patients during the Christmas season:—-Mr. C. F. Millward £2 2s, Sympathetic £2, Plunket Society collection 11s. The total donations to date amount to £l6 9s lOd. It is hoped to reach last year’s amount of £26 5s before the appeal closes early in December.
