PACIFIC ISLANDS

AUSTRALIAN GARRISONS

Canberra, Nov. 22 In a statement on the accelerated return of Australian servicemen from the Pacific, the Prime Minister (Mr. [Chiflcy) said that, the repatriation proI gramme would be completed by the middle of February, 1946, instead of June, 1946 as was originally planned. The only troops remaining in the Pacific by the end of February would be 82.000 garri t i and occupation troops. The Japanese would not be completely cleared from the Pacific for some time, and the garrison troops would be regularly relieved by drafts from the Australian mainland. As a first step more than 10,000 recruits who were in training in Australia when the war ended would be sent overseas as shipping permitted. It was also proposed to give all the troops now serving in the Australian Military Forces and civilians an opportunity to volunteer for Island service.
