MARTON NOTES

OUTBREAK OF MEASLES MARTON DISTRICT HIGH SC HOOL The headmaster’s report tabled at Wednesday evening's meeting of the Marton District High School Committee stated that the attendance in the secondary department was fairly satisfactory, while the primary department had been adversely affected by an outbreak of measles. An indent for a supply of library books had been sent to England and it was hoped that the books will arrive early in the New Year. A sub-committee, comprising Messrs H. J. Cameron, L. J. Tank (headmaster of the Marton Junction School) and G. H. Smith, was appointed to manage lhe affairs of the school dental clinic service in Marton. This is the third year in succession that the school has made a New Zealand record in the amount it has contributed towards National Savings. The board has agreed to the committee granting a Ixalf-holiday to the school when the record amount of £lOOO is obtained. The committee is desirous of obtaining the photos of all ex-pupils of the schooj who have paid the supreme sacrifice in World War 11. Now that hostilities have ceased parents are invited to communicate with lhe secretary, who will acknowledge photos on behalf of the committee. The visiting committee stated that the grounds were in well-kept order and that the fence bordering the stream on the western side of the schooj grounds had been repaired.

The board’s contractors are at. present working at the old Technical School, making provision for extra schoolroom accommodation in the coming year as a temporary measure prior to the erection of a junior block on the school grounds.

Owing to the lack of materia] it will be some time before the work of renewing the netting surrounds of the tennis courts could be put in hand, but in the meantime it was decided to obtain a price for the labour in connection with the repairs. FEDERATED FARMERS OF NEW ZEALAND MEETING OF MARTON BRANCH An urgent general meeting of the Marton branch of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand will be held in the Druids’ Hall, Marton to-night (Friday), November 23, at 7.30 p.m. The business of the meeting will be to consider the proposals submitted by the Dominion Executive and the Action Committee concerning Government Socialistic legislation as it effects the farming community. The meeting wifi be held in committee and the Preset will not be admitted. It is hoped that every farmer who has the welfare of the Dominion as his first consideration will attend, and take part in the discussions. MARTON PIPE BAND At the annual meeting of the Marton Scottish Society, the chief (Mr. A. Stuart) remarked that he was at the Palmerston North Public Hospital and the Pipe Band played at different parts of the grounds. By the look on lhe patients’ faces the music had done more good than all the physic the doctors could give them. He hoped to see the day when the Marton Pipe Band would be marching down the road to give a programme at a Marton hospital—when it was built. All pupils and intending pupils and parents are requested to be present, al a meeting in St. Andrew’s Hall, Marton, on, Saturday, Novemoer 24, at 7.30 p.m. to form a class of learners for ihc Marton Pipe Band. PipeMajor E. C. Morgan, Drum-Major D. A. Almond and Mr. A. McSkimming, president of the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, Wanganui, wi] be present. BIG SHOP DAY Next Tuesday the Victory Hall commitree hopes to finish paying for the hall. A big shop is to be held in the showroom of Ward Motors. Produce, sewing, cake, mystery parcels, competitions, flowers, and' vegetable stalls will be selling their wares all day. MARTON BOWLING CLUB. Players are advised that the third round of the full-rink competition will be played on Saturday next, November 24. Names are to De in by 1.45 p.m. ST. ANDREW’S DAY CHURCH SERVICE. The Marton Scottish Society and all Scottish people are invited to attend a service in the St; Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday night at 7 p.m., November 25. The Rev. J. Robertson will speak on "Robert Burrs and Religion.” Part of the service will be in "braid Scots" and special .singing of the old Psalm tunes so loved by the old Scottish church folk, as well as an anthem and a Scottish solo. EXHIBITION OF WATER COLOURS An exhibition of water colours and etchings by Miss E. J. D. Turner, will be held in the Lounge Tearooms, Marton, commencing on November 26. RANGITIKEI CRICKET.
