RADIO STATION URGED FOR WANGANUI
MR. J. B. COTTERILL PRESSES CITY’S CLAIMS
(Special) Wellington, Nov. 22. “The main purpose of our broadcasting service is to see that all districts get good reception, and there are difficulties in the south of the South Island and in the far north of this island,” said Mr. J. B. F. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, in the House of Representatives to-day, commenting on the report of the Broadcasting Department.
“When we advocate the extension of broadcasting facilities in our own areas we should not advocate the building of stations just for the sake of having them. That makes my position here to-day difficult,” said Mr. Cotterill. “because Wanganui does get. excellent reception from the Wellington stations. But the people of Wanganui feel that, when we are in a position to extend our services they should have a broadcasting station of their own. “Wanganui is a centre of population which takes a very keen interest in music. It is a cultural centre and we have established a reputation with our bands and orchestral and choral societies,” added Mr. Cotterill. “We think lhe establishment of a broadcasting station does give encouragement to local talent, and that is something we should encourage in every possible way.”
