FIRE ON FREIGHT TRAIN
A slight delay to traffic on the Main Trunk line occurred late on Thursday night as the result of an outbreak of fire in a wagon attached to an express freight train running from Wellington to Auckland.
After the train had passed through Pokaka, 11 miles north of Ohakune, the train crew noticed that one wagon, loaded with general merchandise, was on fire. The train was promptly sent back to Pokaka, where the fire was extinguished by the crew, with the assistance of local resdents.
The damage to the contents was not extensive and the wagon itself, one of the steel double-bogie type, was not affected.
