FLOOD DAMAGE TO ROADS

COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING Details of flood damage which occurred in the Wanganui County during the period of abnormally heavy rain at the end of October were given by the engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawson, at the monthly meeting yesterday. Considerable trouble was caused by slips and damage to the metal surface of roads, and it was estimated that repairs would cost approximately £7OO. The chairman, Cr. A. H. Collins, presided, also in attendance being Crs. T. Mitchell, R. A. Bamber, L. A. Mackintosh, E. T. Hine, N. Neilson, R. W. Stewart, F. G. Friedrich, L. C. Anderson, and W. WANGAEHU VALLEY ROAD: This road was closed to traffic for a few days due to slips w’hich necessitated the use of a bulldozer for their removal. The road has since been surfaced by the grader and metal repairs are now being made. The Aranui Bluff has been cleared of all slips and this portion of the road is being surfaced with grit. Repairs have been made to Polson’s bridge. UPPER WANGAEHU VALLEY ROADS: Slips have occurred on Fields Track and Upper Wangaehu Valley roads, for which a bulldozer is at present engaged for the removal of -ame. All slips have been cleared on Fields Track and the bulldozer is now working on the formation of approximately five chains of new road near Kennedys, where further settlement of the under slip recently took place. It is expected that this work will be completed this week after which the surface will be metalled. The removal of slips betwen Pungataua and Mt. View should be completed next week.

KAKATAHI ROADS: Machintosh’s and Raupiu roads have been blocked by slips. The former has been cleared and a track has been opened on the latter. It will be finally completed next week by the use of a hulldozer. PARIHAUHAU ROADS: There have been a number of slips on the Parihauhau, Te Komai and Mangawhowhi roads. Two former roads have been cleared and it is proposed to remove slips on the latter by the use of a bulldozer, and at the same time widen the road in place.: prior to me ailing, for which tenders will be invited at an early date.

UPOKONGARO ROADS: Minor metal and pumice repairs have been made on the Kaiwhaiki road and light metal repairs on the Makirikiri Valley road. OKOIA ROADS: The Long Acre road was blocked for a short period by slips but otherwise little damage was done by the flood. The engineer reported also that further slips which hart occurred at the top end of the Creek Road would be removed by a bulldozer in a few days. The Mangamahu Road was recently surfaced bv grader and was in good ordor. Repairs to a filling on the Mangawhero Road would be carried out nt an early date. Street improvements in the Fordell township would be started al an earlv date.
