SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE OPENED

WANGANUI EXHIBITORS IN PRIZE LIST

The 62nd. in an unbroken series since the inception of the Egmont A. and P. Association, South Taranaki’s first post-war agr.cultural and pastoral show opened at Hawera yesterday under most favourable conditions. Livestock judging took place in mild, sunny weather and a large attendance of the public found a wealth of exhibits of high merit to command interest and enthusiasm.

Apart from the attention paid to the horses, cattle, sheep and pigs, main interest was centred in schoolchildren’s calves, extraordinarily large entries of which represented the pick of 926 pets entered in this year’s South Taranaki Agricultural Clubs’ ’■earing compet'tion, the judging of which at some 60 schools has been in progress in the past fortnight. A parade of exhibits that come forward for show judging (prior to tne grand championship judging which takes place at Eltham on December 12) was led by the combined Hawera Main School and Hawera Technical High School Band.

The show will be officially opened to-day by the Trade Commissioner for Canada in New Zealand, Dr. W. A. Riddell, who will be introduced by the president of the association, Mr. W. McL’Dowie, and welcomed by the Mayor of Hawera, Mr. L. H. Clapham, and the M.P. for Patea, Mr. W. A. Sheat. The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand will be represented by the president, Mr. B. E. Keiller, of Palmerston North. Principal among the day’s events in the oval will be the grand parade of livestock, a parade of 20 uniformed marching teams with attendant bands, and horse competitions and trotting, while in another part of the grounds there will be national dancing. Among Wanganui and district successes in various sections were the following awards:— Miss Freda White’s (Palmerston North) Kopere carried off the championship for saddle horses (hack), Mr. S. F. Besley’s (Waverley) Blitz securing the reserve championship. Mr. L. Elliot (Kai Iwi) exhibited the champion ram in the Romnev Marsh (in wool and natual condition) section.

Mr. P. Bennett's (Kai Iwi) Episode IV secured first prize for Ayrshire heifer (calved Since June 1, 1943. The same exhibitor's Tiraumea Laddie was placed first among bulls calved since June 1. 1945. Horrocks Bros. (Makirikiri) in the M.lking Shorthorn section, secured firsts for heifer calved since June 1, 1944, two heifers calved since June 1, 1944, heifer calved since June 1, 1945, bull calved since June 1, 1944, bull calved since June 1, 1945, and junior breeding group (yearling bull and two yearl.ng heifers); seconds for heifer calved since June 1, 1941, heifer calved since June 1, 1944; thirds for cow calved prior to June 1, 1942, and two females two years old or over. Also in the Milking Shorthorn section, Mr. Geo Sim (Wanganui) secured first for heifer calved since June 1, 1943, first for mare or gelding up to 13st. In the saddle horse section Mr. S. F. Besley (Waverley) secured firrt for mare or gelding most suitable for remount purposes, second for mare or gelding most suitable for a hunter, second for lady’s hack over 15 hands, and second for best paced and mannered hack; Mr. J. Goodwin (Taihape) secured first for mare or gelding up to 15st., first for mare most suitable for breeding hunters, second for mare or gelding most suitable for a hunter, second for mare or gelding most suitable for remount purposes; Mr. M. Ross (Wanganui) secured third for mare or gelding up to 15st • and Mr. G. W. Perrett (Wanganui? secured third for weight-carrying cob 141 to 15 hands. In the Romney Marsh section Stanley Hughes (Maxwell) secured first for ewe under 18 months; in wool and natural condition, L. Elliot (Kai Iwi) secured first for ram over two months, first and second for ram under 18 months, and third for ram under 18 months, shorn. In the Southdown section, Nelson Hughes (Maxwell) secured first for ewe over 18 months, second for ram over 18 months, shorn, third for ram over 18 months, third and v.h.c. for ewe under 18 months, and v.h.c. for ewe under 18 months
