Stanford, applied for an amendment to allow them to run a daily service between Marton and Wanganui. Mr. Skoglund, in adjourning the application, pointed out that under the Transport Act, If a Government department held a licence, another could not be granted without the consent of the Minister of the department concerned. At present a licence for the run was held by the Railways Department. Application from Churton and Bruce, Rata, for an extra vehicle authority to operate within a five-mile radius of the Rata Post Office was adjourned. Permission to operate a taxi from Sanson was sought by F. J. Murphy, a returned serviceman, who stated he also intended opening a service station in Sanson. The authority agreed to grant the licence when he was satisfied that approval and assistance from the Rehabilitation Department to start a service station, had been granted. PASSENGER SERVICE TO LAKE ALICE An application was recieved from Chapman's Services, Bulls, to run a passenger service between Bulls and the Lake Alice mental hospital construction site. The applicant pointed out that many workmen from the job desired transport to Bulls, and at present no reasonable able service was offering. Support of the Bulls Town Board in the scheme was expressed in a letter from the chairman, Mr. R. G. MafcKay.

A Public Works Department representative, Mr. E. L. Brett, said about 40 workmen were on the job, and their own lorries were the only means of transport to Bulls. Mr. Skoglund referred to terms of the application, which referred to the service being run “as and when required, and said he did not wish to | grant a licence under such wide conditions. Ho adjourned the hearing until Mr. S. TfcDowell, who appeared for applicant could bring forward a proposed timetable. TAXI LICENCES NI HUNTERVILLE. Three applications for taxi licences in Hunterville were heard. An application for a transfer of licence from H. W. Thomas to R. H. Taylor, a returned serviceman, was not granted. Taylor, in evidence, said he had agreed to pay Thomas 1200 for the business and would provide his own car. Mr. Skoglund pointed out that Thomas's licence was extended at the last sitting of the authority on the understanding that it would be transferred to K. Hatfull, on his return from overseas. Apart from the latter consideration, he considered the f2OO excessive. Hatfull applied for a licence, and stated that although at one time he thought Thomas would transfer his licence to him, when he heard it had been transferred to Taylor, he put in a separate application. Still another ex-serviceman applicant for a licence was F. G. Kronast, also at one time had thought he might be able to obtain the transfer of Thomas's licence. On this assumption he had moved from Auckland to Hunterville.

Mr. Thomas explained to the Authority that he had originally intended transferring the licence to Hatful!, but was told by the applicant's father that he would not be requiring it. Negotiations had then been opened with Kronast and Taylor. Mr. Skogldnd adjourned all applications until the existing licence expired.
