WAIKATO CUP FIELD

SWIFT QUARRY AND DUNBAR HAVE PROSPECTS (Special) Auckland, Nov. 14. Swift Quarry ran well enough in the King George Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday to be given almost an outstanding chance in the Waikato Cup. He was caught in the unusual role of pacemaker and after carrying the Held along he failed to put much dash into his finishing effort. With a differently-run race on Saturday he should be a good betting proposition. One pleasing feature ot his outing last week was that he did not reveal any effects o£ his fall at Ellerslie a month earlier, although he pulled up a bit tender.

After his fine run into third place in the King George Handicap at the Avondale fixture, the Stratfordtrained Dunbar will be in demand for the Waikato Cup this week. His most dangerous opponents appear to be Swift Quarry and Orakau. The class is not so good as that seen out last week.

If Avondale form could only be repeated, then Bonny Pay and Black Beret should run great races in the sprint, the Cambridge Handicap, at Te Rapa on Saturday. Last week’s winner, Sweet Biscuit, is also engaged and will go well if she is not taken to Riccarton this week.

At the start of the King George Handicap at Ellerslie, Dunbar, who had drawn number one marble, jumped into the hurdle dividing the field off from the inside rail and lost about four lengths. At the end of the first half-mile he was sharing last place with Representative. Crossing the top he began a forward move, but was still a long way back at the turn, and so his finishing run into third place behind two good horses in Lou Rosa and Broiedame was impressive. Dunbar has 7.0 on Saturday, so he has a big pull in the weights now. Bonny Pay drew number seventeen in the sprint last week and so his performance in getting up with the leader quickly was a smart one, more particularly as he hung on right to the end and it took a good one In Sweet Biscuit to silence him. Bonny Pay comes in one pound better on Saturday in the Waikato sprint so, like Dunbar, fie has a pull. Black Beret, an unlucky runner last week, will be difficult on Saturday if he gets a better run on his home course. The Ruling Master —Park Royal bracket was made an even-money favourite for the Three Kings Hack on Saturday last each being in a different division. Park Royal made much the better showing, for he was one of the pacemakers all the way, only to weaken in the Anal stages into fourth place. He will be improved by the outing and may win at the next Auckland fixture. He is not engaged at the Waikato meeting. Ruling Master missed the jump-out and after that he always appeared to be in difficulties. Apparently this gelding will do best when allowed to run his own race out i n front, when he can get there. He is in the Waikato Guineas. BEAU VOLO UNLUCKY

An unlucky horse running to-day is certainly Beau Volo. He showed a lot of pace at the Auckland meeting last month and was then taken to Whangarei, where he was beaten a nose by Commissar in a tight finish. He was third on the second day of the northern fixture and was then produced in the Apprentices’ Handicap at Ellerslie last week. Once again the decision went against him, a nose being the margin. In another stride he would have got the verdict. Such consistency must meet its own reward in the near future.

Bronya was the last of the seventeen horses to leave the barrier in her division of the Three Kings Hack on Saturday and she finished fourth, so the merit in this effort speaks for itself. This filly has a great turn of speed and it is surprising that to date she has won only one race, a modest maiden affair at Paeroa some weeks ago. Bronya looks a first-rate proposition for her engagement in the hack seven furlongs at Te Rapa this week. The Te Rapa A. Winder, appears to hold a good hand in the Tamahere Stakes, the two-year-old handicap event at Te Rapa on Saturday, for he has Grand Tourist, Barwon and Mindora engaged. Grand Tourist won well at Te Aroha last month and Mindora is improving with experience. Grand Tourist did not have a chance in the Avondale Stakes after starting slowly. Barwon is coming along nicely and he may make a very forward showing on Saturday.
