POLICE CANNOT TAKE MATTER FURTHER
DEATH OF ELDERLY WOMAN (P.A.) Auckland, Nov. 14 “Apparently the police inquiries cannot take this matter any further,” said the city coroner, Mr. Addison when he concluded an inquest into the death of Mrs. Emily Jane Burgess, aged 79, widow, of Birkenhead who was found lying unconscious on the side of the road about 10 minutes after she had left, her home on August 15.
She was removed to the Auckland hospital and died on August 17. Detective-Sergeant Kearney said he made an examination of the roadway where the deceased was found injured, but there was no evidence to indicate how she was hurt.
A thorough search was made in the locality for any instrument that, might have been used to inflict injury on Mrs. Burgess’s head, but none wa.-> found. The cuts in her hat corresponded with the ones on her head. Inouiries and a house-to-house canvas.* was made in the locality, and approximately 400 persons had been interviewed.
A verdict that the deceased's death was caused by a fracture of the skull and cerebral haemorrhage, and that there was insufficient evidence to show how she received the fatal injuries was returned by the coroner.
