SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Helen Tosswill. Tokomaru Bay, arrives in Wanganui to-day and will be the guest of Mrs W- L. Hodges, Webb Road. Mrs. D. Buck, Christchurch, is visiting Wanganui and is staying at the Central Hotel. Miss Betty Whiteley, a pupil of Aiss Audiina Allen, was successful in passing her A.T.C.L. (practical) for elocution in the recent Trinity College examinations held in Palmerston North by Mr. Bernard Page. ENGAGEMENT Jeeves— Robertson. Mr. and Mrs. John Robertson, Marton, wish to announce the engagement of their daughter Ellen, to Flying-Officer Albert Bartrum Jeeves, D.F.C., son of Mrs. M. J. Jeeves, Mt. Roskill, Auckland. HITHER AND THITHER Gift Party Misses M. and L. Lynch were hostesses at a kitchen gift party at their home in Gonville on Tuesday evening for Miss P. Lynch, whose marriage will take place shortly. The guest of honour was the recipient of some very nice and useful gifts. A most enjoyable evening was spent, in games and competitions. Princess at Welsh Guides’ Camp H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth, wearing the bue uniform of Sea Ranger Commodore, had a tremendous welcome from 3000 Girl Guides when she visited the Welsh Guide camp near Cardiff recently. There were many Guides from European countries present at this rally and in her speech the Princess made special reference to the chance the young people of today have to go forward together in friendship one nation with another. Use of Aniline Dyes in Food The N.Z. Food Value League has put a creat deal of work into an investigation into the use of aniline dyes in food. It is pointed out that these dyes were coal tar derivatives, and unless there was clear evidence that any particular dye was Harmful the Health Department did not find it practicable to prohibit its use. The position, the league felt, was unsatisfactory. No dye should be used unless it has been proved harmless, and the public should be educated to prefer less highly coloured foods. The league is also investigating into the use of preservatives in meat.

Rangataua Women’s Institute Visitors from Mangaweka were welcomed at the monthly meeting of the Rangataua Women’s Institute by the president, Mrs. Thodson. An instructive talk on institute matters was given by Mrs. Samuda, who also gave a recitation. After business was dealt with and arrangements made for a Christmas pariy for members’ children, the visitors judged the competitions. Remits were: Sugar bag apron, Mrs. Stretton 1, Mrs. Shields 2, Mrs. Francoise 3: cookery, jam pastry, Mrs Francoise 1, Mrs. Stretton 2, Mrs Eades 3; premier flower, Mrs. Pumphry. P.W. M. U. Conference At the annual conference of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, held in Invercargill, the annual report recorded that the membership stood at 11,173. and that the total givings of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union this year amounted lo £‘20,952 8s 7d, an increase of £862 11s 2d. The union had contributed fully half the amount of thp Church Missionary Budget. Under the will of Miss Jessie Keir, a member of St. Andrew’s (Christchurch) Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, the union received a legacy of £986 8 S 4d in cash. A third of this sum was to go to medical work in India, and a third to Maori work.
