ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

LEVIN CANDIDATES GALLOP Horses engaged at the Levin meeting, to be held at Otaki on Saturday, were given their semi-final gallops at Awapuni under ideal conditions on Tuesday. Some worked on the course proper, where the flags were thirty feet out, and others on the plough, which was slow over the last three furlongs. Broiefield (G. R. Tattersall) worked over a mile and three furlongs, keeping to fifteen to the furlong lor the first mile. Then he was given his head and he came home brilliantly in 38 3-5. He has improved a lot during the last week or two. Langue d’Or and Saludas galloped a mile and they were going well at the finish after running the lull distance in 1.49 4-5. V. J. Sellars is to ride Langue d’Or in the New Zealand Cup. Kaitoa (B. Borham) worked over about a mile and a-quarter with little pace on to the three from which peg he slipped home smoothly in 38 3-5. Tremello (Tattersall) also covered a mile and a-quarter, being under a good hold to the three. There he was speeded up to run the last three easily in 39.

Alethea (Sellars) also worked once round with the pace on for the last three in 39.

Swift Jay (W. J. Broughton) covered the last seven of a mile in 1.35 and the last three in 41 3-5. Beneve (H. Pearce) was in front of First King (Broughton) at the end of six from the barrier run in 1.22 3-5. They cut the first three out in 40 2-5. Rampant (G. Walker) covered the last five of a mile in 1.8 1-5. Theolatenal (Broughton) went from the six furlong barrier- and he could have done better than 1.10 3-5 for the last five.

Fen (A. S. Ewan) was home in 42 to run the last seven of a mile in 1.39. Lord Bradbury (Broughton) and Sir Bradbury (D. Collins) were never off the bit -when running five in 1.10 2-5, the last three in 42. Gala Song (A. Bowness) went once round the pace being quickened for the last three in 40.

Young Margaret (Collins) was timed to run half a mile in 54 2-5.

Indira (Tattersall) was given a “pipe-opener” over three and she was not required to do better than 39 4-5. Dileas (Tattersall) worked over a mile, being kept to just under 16 to the furlong to the three from which peg he came home easily in 39 4-5. ON THE PLOUGH Flying Ace (J. Fagan) was keen to work and he sprinted six furlongs easily in 1.23. Dutch Mary (R. Saunders), Jrom the same stable, began quickly and went on to cover five in 1.9 3-5. She looks well. Theiolyn (Ewan) did strong pace work but was not out to make time. Don Mac (Tattersall) had Park Light as a companion in a three furlong butter which took them 39 3-5. * * « * Some smart sprinters will be seen in action at Motukarara, among them a number of Stewards’ candidates. Two of the most fancied of the Stewards' runners may be Irish Note and Pensacola at Trentham and Irish Note at Rangiora. Pensacola’s appearance and his form at Trentham greatly impressed those present and he should be a better horse now-. Irish Note was a good sprinter last year and won at the Manawatu summer meeting. He was placed in the last Stewards’ Handicap and probably will be found to hve improved since last season.
