CONTROLLED ECONOMY IN GREECE
SEVEN-POINT PROGRAMME
Athens, Nov. 9. The Government has announced a seven-point programme for controlled economy in an agreement with the British and Americ-n Embassies and U N.R.R.A. The agreement provides: Firstly, for readjustment of taxation and an increase of prices of U.N.R.R.A. supplies in order to balance the Bud- 1 get on a sound foundation.
Secondly, an increase of imports. Foreign currency’ will be allocated without obstruction fnr the import Gt every item considered useful and permitted to be imnorted by the State. The price and use of imported goods Will be controlled.
Thirdly, foreign currency will b n sold to importers at official rates, but subject to surcharges, varying with the types of goods, for the purpose of absorbing the difference between the world and domestic price levels. Fourthly, the issue of credits will be controlled with the object of developing production and internal trade.
Fifthly, application will be made, on broader basis, for financial assistance from Allied sources, and. if granted, will be used mainly for the country’s Immediate rehabilitation.
Sixthly, UN.R.R.A. supplies will be distributed and valued promptly. Seventhly, effective price control will be enforced.
