ANOTHER MATERNITY HOME TO CLOSE
(P.A.) Invercargill, Nov. 12 Because of increased costs and shortage of domestic staff Ihe To Rata Maternity Hospital is to close on May 31 next. The Health Department has been advised of the decision of the proprietors. Te Rata, which has 11 beds and is fully booked to May 31, has been a maternity home over a quarter of a century. It is stated that about. 30 per cent, of the total births in Invercargill each vear take place at To Rata. Experienced nurses are available, but the problem is the domestic staff. During the past four years the costs increased 50 per cent., but payments from the Social Security Department remained at the same level. Replacement costs also greatly increased.
