A passer-by had his attention attracted to a car standing outside the factory in Duncan Street, Wanganui East, and telephoned Mr. Anderson. As he approached the factory, Mr. Anderson heard the engine of a car being started, and saw its lights go on. This was at 12.55 a.m. and the street lights were out. As Mr. Anderson smashed the windscreen with a hammer he was carrying two men slipped from the car on the opposite side. Mr. Anderson grappled with one man, but received a heavy blow which staggered him, and the men escaped. A message was put through on the telephone to Mr. Alfred Anderson, sen., also a director of the company, He immediately telephoned the Central Police Station, and picked up Constables O. Foster and G. Adsett. They arrived on the scene a few minutes too late to be of assistance.

An Investigation of the factory revealed that a padlock on the outside of the front door had bben prised ofl and that a pane of glass had been broken, giving access to the lock.
